Job Summary: The Director oversees all Visual Arts staff and programming within the Wellesley Public Schools.  Essential functions include the educational development and delivery of the Visual Arts curriculum as well as the supervision and evaluation of Visual Arts staff teaching.

 

Performance Responsibilities: 

  1. Plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate all Visual Arts curriculum and programs.
  2. Develop and execute a plan of yearly program objectives.
  3. Plan, manage, and evaluate Visual Arts course and program offerings.
  4. With school principals, facilitate the recruitment, selection and hiring of Visual Arts staff.
  5. Supervise and evaluate Visual Arts staff.
  6. Lead department meetings and activities, which build and maintain a culture of professional collaboration.
  7. Plan and provide professional development for the faculty.
  8. In collaboration with principals and/or assistant principals, assign staffing and teaching responsibilities.
  9. Prepare and administer the Visual Arts program budget and, as required and requested, generate departmental budgetary reports.
  10. Support the implementation of the Visual Arts program into other areas of curriculum.
  11. Meet with staff to coordinate and arrange student placements, teacher assignments, and student and teacher schedules.
  12. With the department staff, manage the selection, purchase and distribution of departmental supplies and equipment.
  13. Maintain effective communication and public relations regarding theVisual Arts program within the school community and between the school system and the town.
  14. In accordance with the WEA Unit B contract, teach up to one course per semester and/or one per quarter.
  15. Keep abreast of innovative Visual Arts teaching techniques, programs, and research through participation in professional organizations and activities.
  16. Monitor equipment maintenance and safety issues in Visual Arts classrooms and venues.
  17. Attend and support departmental activities, including events which occur during the evenings and on weekends.
  18. Execute other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Licensed – or the demonstrated ability to obtain a license – through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) licensure as a Supervisor/Director - Core (Arts).
  • Candidates with at least five (5) years of teaching experience and/or three (3) years of administrative experience are highly preferred.
  • Strong instructional leadership skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills.

  • Commitment to supporting a diverse populations of students, establishing strong relationships with staff and caregivers, and ensuring equity in educational opportunities and outcomes.
  • Ability to develop and implement culturally sustaining programs that promote student, family and community engagement as well as an inclusive school climate.

Work Year: 204 days in accordance with with terms of the Wellesley Educators Association Unit B collective bargaining agreement
